General practitioners

You are free to choose your general practitioner, though you should check to make sure that s/he has signed a contract with the  insurance company with which you have taken out health insurance. If this is not the case, your insurance provider will in fact reimburse the doctor, but only when it is a case of "essential" or "urgent" treatment.

Visits to your doctor will be covered by your insurance policy, though you will have to pay a nominal charge of 30 Kč for each visit. If you need to visit a specialist, your GP will arrange for this; the  financial arrangements are the same as in the case of treatment by your GP.

Specialist physician
The general practitioner writes a recommendation to a specialist of the respective branch of medicine, but the patient must select the specialist and arrange the  visit himself/herself. The general practitioner may recommend one of the specialists to the patient at the utmost, but it is not his/her obligation.

Admission to hospitals is done on the  recommendation of your GP or a specialist, according to your specific needs. Treatment in a public hospital will be covered by your health insurance, though you will have to pay a daily charge for the duration of your stay there.

Dental care
Adults should have preventive examinations once a year.
